Abstract:

In this talk, we will discuss Apple’s success in the mobilephone and Google’s delving into self-driving car as examples of the softwarerevolution. Such revolutionary disruption occurs not only in IT and service industriesbut also in conventional industries such as manufacturing and agriculture. Keyenabler of such disruption is software technology and the internet.

Software and the internet is intrinsically a business for smalland medium enterprises because it requires fast decision making and innovation.Starting up an IT-based business becomes much easier than ever due to cloudcomputing, open source software and widely available micro venture capitals. Moreover, the global nature of internet service makes the business grow or die fast.

Reviewing the global IT mega trend, it would be obvious thatmobile application and internet service are the most promising areas for the Koreansoftware industry. In addition, creation of jobs attractive by young generationis the most urgent economic and social task for Korea. For this reason, recent promotionof IT startups draws national attention.

As an endeavor to foster entrepreneurship and to support ITstartups systematically, a nation-wide private voluntary organization calledAppcenter Movement was initiated in 2009. It organizes developer meetings andworkshops to inspire, educate, empower startup teams. It also promotes sharing ofsample designs, sound sources, and program code among developers. Recently, itinitiated Kstartup, a Silicon Valley style startup acceleration and investment programfor the first time in Korea.
